ARS Minutes: 10/3/17

  • The evening began at 6 p.m. with Benediction and the recitation of the rosary in the church with the Franciscans, led by Joanne Cunningham, Prelate.
  • Rebecca Novacel shared pictures and reflections of her recent trip to Haiti while members enjoyed chili, cornbread, and cookies. Joanne Cunningham led the blessing before the meal.
  • The business meeting began at 7:15 p.m. with an opening prayer led by Joanne Cunningham, with 29 members in attendance.
  • Minutes of the previous meeting of September 5, 2017 were provided to the members. The minutes were approved with a motion by Margaret Staahl and seconded by Mary Ann Shay.
  • Linda Wasson presented the treasurer’s report. Pat Saeger made a motion to approve the report and it was seconded by Linda Wasson. Motion carried and the report was approved.

Old Business

  • There was no update on the large altar server cassock, discussed at the August meeting.

New Business

  • Barb Mulligan, chairperson of the Rummage Sale, gave a summary of how the sale went.
    • It brought in over $2,000 from donated items and $170 from the OLQA Cafe.
    • The cafe sold only $20 on Saturday – it was decided that at the next Rummage Sale we would only sell food on the Friday.
    • Shoppers noted that items were easily organized.
    • There was some confusion at the beginning regarding the price of items and paying at each table. The possibility of making a brief announcement to shoppers at the beginning of the day was discussed.
    • It will be decided at a later date if the sale should be annually or biannually.
    • Please contact Barb with any suggestions for the future.
  • ARS Retreat – Saturday, October 7, 2017 – Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary
    • The retreat will be 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., presented by Claire Waldron.
    • A light breakfast and lunch will be served.
    • Sandy Ragozine noted that 13 people have signed up.
    • Claire has space for up to 25 – if you are able to come, please do.
  • Nomination of New Officers
    • All five offices had a volunteer:
      • President – Amanda Darke (2017-18), Joanne Cunningham (2018-19)
      • Vice President – Bonnie Smith
      • Secretary – Megan McCoy
      • Treasurer – Linda Helch
      • Prelate – JoAnn Elwell
    • A motion to vote was made by Margaret Saahl and was seconded by Barb Mulligan. Motion carried and the five officers were elected by a show of hands.
    • Mary Ann Shay, chair of the nominating committee, thanked everyone for their prayers in this process.


  • Barbara J Cruise with the OLQA Choir
    • The date has been changed to Sunday, November 26 at 7 p.m.
    • The cost is $10 per person.
    • If interested, you must call Gigi Beatty at 412-916-2495 to reserve your spot.
  • Parish Feast Day – Saturday, December 9
    • Celebrating after mass.
    • They have asked the Rosarians to make cookies again this year.
    • Sandy noted that last year there were not enough made and she needed to buy some to supplement.
    • Please be as generous as you always are!
  • Gifts for Kids
    • Distribution day will be Thursday, December 14 at 9 a.m.
    • Monday and Tuesday will be working days to get everything together. Please plan to help if you are available – it is a big undertaking.

Father David Carter’s Remarks

  • Father David thanked everyone for the great work on the Rummage Sale. He would like to see more activities at OLQA but not necessarily from ARS.


  • Diane Fritz was the winner of the 50/50 for $11.50.
  • Sandy thanked the hostesses for the evening, Pam Humes and Dolly Werner.
  • Joanne Cunningham led a closing prayer.
  • Father David offered a final prayer.
  • Barb Mulligan made a motion to adjourn. Irene Frey seconded the motion. Motion carried and the meeting was adjourned at 7:52 p.m.
  • The next business meeting is November 7, 2017.
